Frist Friday

Friday Night Football for The Tennessean

High school football is always full of interesting things to shoot. Unfortunately I had a grocery list of photos I had to get tonight, so I couldn't really hang around and get the photos I would want to. Either way, its still fun to just go to these things.

Boxing for The Tennessean

Marshall and I got to photograph boxing last night. Having never shot boxing, I was a little nervous about getting something for the paper. It was a lot of fun though and I still had blood on my lenses this morning. Check out Marshall's stuff too whenever she gets around to putting it up. ;-)

Toyota Tundra 200 for The Tennessean

I shot auto racing for the first time last night.

Lessons Learned:

1. Ear plugs are a MUST. Those things are REALLY REALLY loud.
2. A 70-200 is plenty of glass
3. The number 200 in the race does NOT mean 200 laps. It was only 150. Unfortunately, I learned this lesson as I was walking out of the infield tunnel and saw the smoke of the winner doing his burn out and hundreds of flash bulbs going off in the distance. Wooooops!
4. The beginning of the race doesn't really matter unless someone wrecks. Ill shoot the pits next time.

Small But Significant Discoveries

Today was one of those days where nothing happened. It was a normal day. Easy. Relaxing. And nothing happened. But I still wanted to push myself to make some kind of picture. I only had my camera with me for about 20 minutes today and only shot about 10 frames, but I got something. Its easy to get a picture if there are dazzling things in front of you or if you are somewhere new and exciting. We used to talk about this in John White's class. There would always be someone who wanted so badly to go to a war or work somewhere exotic because they wanted to make "great" photographs. But their work that they were shooting in Chicago wasn't great yet. So he would always ask, "Whats going to be different when you go there?" Sure, that setting will resemble what "great" photos look like, but will the content be there? They would typically reply that there was just nothing interesting to shoot in Chicago.

I guess thats why I started this blog in the first place. To push myself to make something everyday that I would want to show someone, all the while being somewhere like Nashville, which, honestly, is not very exciting on the surface. And hopefully in doing that, it would push me to get better, so when I am put in a situation that is important, I can handle it. I hate missing days on this thing. I feel like everyday I dont make a photo I have failed myself and Im being lazy. Which, for the most part, is true. There are a few situations that cause me to not be able to put a photo up, but usually, if its not there, Im just being lazy.
